Activating XM radio in your car is usually a quick process, but the steps differ depending on whether your vehicle is new, used, or still covered by a dealer trial. This guide walks you through each scenario so you can start listening as soon as possible.

<Note>
  This is an independent guide and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by SiriusXM.
</Note>

## Before you start

Make sure you have your Radio ID (also called ESN or SID) ready. You can usually find it by tuning to channel 0 on your radio, or on a label on the radio unit itself. If you need help locating it, see our guide on [finding your Radio ID](/blog/find-your-radio-id).

Also, park your car outdoors with a clear view of the sky before you begin activation. Satellite signals need an unobstructed path, so garages, carports, and underground parking can block the signal and delay activation.

## New cars with a dealer trial

Many new vehicles come with a complimentary XM trial sponsored by the manufacturer or dealer. Here is how it typically works:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn on the radio">
    Start your vehicle and switch to XM mode. If a trial is active, you should already hear channels.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check trial status">
    Look for an on-screen message or menu option that shows your trial status and expiration date.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Decide before it ends">
    If you want to keep service after the trial, contact SiriusXM or visit siriusxm.com before the trial expires to choose a plan and avoid interruption.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  You do not need to activate a dealer trial manually in most cases. The trial begins automatically when the vehicle is sold.
</Tip>

## Used cars with an active subscription

If you bought a used car and the previous owner had an active XM subscription, the radio may still work for a short time. However, the subscription belongs to the owner, not the vehicle. Here is what to do:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check if channels are playing">
    Turn the radio to XM mode. If you hear channels, note how long they remain active.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start your own subscription">
    Visit siriusxm.com or call SiriusXM customer care to set up a new subscription in your name. You will need your Radio ID.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask about transfer offers">
    In some cases, the previous owner can transfer their subscription to another radio. If you know the previous owner, they may be able to move their plan to a new device and let you start fresh.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Do not assume a used car's XM service will stay active indefinitely. The previous owner can cancel or transfer their subscription at any time, which will stop service to your vehicle.
</Warning>

## Activating a radio that has never been subscribed

If your car has an XM-capable radio but has never been activated, follow these steps:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Park outdoors">
    Find a spot with a clear view of the sky. This is important because the activation signal is sent via satellite.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Gather your Radio ID">
    Tune to channel 0 or check the label on your radio unit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Contact SiriusXM">
    Visit siriusxm.com or call SiriusXM customer care. Provide your Radio ID and follow the prompts to choose a plan and activate.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for the signal">
    Activation can take 10 to 15 minutes. Keep the radio on and in XM mode during this time.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  If channels do not appear after 15 minutes, try turning the radio off and on, or moving the vehicle to a more open area. You can also request a signal refresh from siriusxm.com.
